About Stephen Mehler
Stephen’s Books
The Land of Osiris (Adventures Unlimited Press, 2001)
From Light into Darkness (Adventures Unlimited Press, 2005)
Stephen Mehler was born in New York City, where his early education focused on the sciences. In 1967 he received a B.S. in Human Physiology and Anatomy with a minor in Chemistry from Hunter College, City University of New York, and after spending four years in the US Airforce during the Vietnam conflict, Stephen resumed academic work, receiving an MA in Natural Sciences, specializing in Human Ecology, in 1974 from San Jose State University.
During the summer of 1974, Stephen had the opportunity to work on an archaeological excavation in the south of France, and while working with Professor François Bordes of the University of Bordeaux, who was Director of Antiquities of Southeast France, Stephen developed a love of archaeology and geology. Having a strong interest in ancient Egypt since he was a young man, Stephen combined all his interests and received his second MA in Natural Sciences, this time specializing in Egyptology, from San Jose State University in 1978.
In November 1992, Stephen got the opportunity to visit Egypt where he met Abd’El Hakim Awyan (1926-2008), an Egyptologist, archaeologist, senior tour guide, and Indigenous Wisdom Keeper. Becoming Hakim’s main student and later colleague, Stephen and Hakim founded the discipline of Khemitology, that differs strongly from academic Egyptology.
With Hakim’s guidance, Stephen has written two books, The Land of Osiris (Adventures Unlimited Press, 2001) and From Light into Darkness (Adventures Unlimited Press, 2005).
He has co-led a total of some 20 tours to Egypt from 1998 to 2018, and today lives in Lafayette, Colorado, with his wife, teacher and novelist Theresa Crater and their cat Cleopatra.
